Who was he?
Alfred Wegener was a German scientist who initially completed his doctorate in astronomy. He didn’t think he could discover anything new so he moved into climate research. He then went on to develop the theory of continental drift.
Wegener’s theory
Alfred Wegener came up with the theory of continental drift at the beginning of the 20th century. His believed that the Earth’s continents used to be connected, but separated over time. It helped to explain why rocks and fossils could both be found on such distant continents. His theory was laughed at by most scientists of his time, but was eventually accepted as fact.
This video shows how the continents have moved over time.
